Hipihi is open beta now

The indented section following is copied from the HIpihi forums English language forum, the Overseas Zone:

HiPiHi enters open public beta

We are very excited announce the debuting of HiPiHi’s open public beta test, beginning from April 18th,
2008. From now on, our HiPiHi world will welcome new residents from all
corners around the world and join our existing residents on this
magical land created by yourselves.

During this period, feel free to invite your friends to become new residents through our new resident registration page
For our existing residents (who did not complete the name-change process during April 2nd -17th),
we will kept your virtual assets on our server but your username runs
the risk of being over-ridden by new residents as their “nickname”. You
can still use your old username and password to take back your assets.
Here are some examples for you to understand your situation:
  1. Resident
“Happygirl” did not complete the name-change process during April 2nd
-17th. From April 18th, new residents may take this name as their
    nickname.
  2. If Resident “happygirl” trys to log in after
April 18th, she will be auto-directed to the name-change page, where
she may still use “Happygirl” as her username if it has not been taken
by new users, or to change her name (e.g. “happgirl_me”) if her old
name was occupied by a new resident.
We kindly remind you to enter our name-change page as soon as possible to protect your old username.
Note: Please download our 50021 customer side for your usage in this new period.

The start page for Hipihi is hipihi.com .

The English information page is at http://www.hipihi.com/index_en.html .

The English registration page is at http://service.hipihi.com/member/register/en/register.jhtml .

For help in English with Hipihi you can use the Hipihi OverSeas Zone forum, once you’ve registered with Hipihi. Note that the forum software itself is in Chinese.

Another place to go for help in English with Hipihi is http://www.ideashape.cn . Note that the forum software at http://www.ideashape.cn is in English.

There’s also a Hipihi group in facebook.

The downloads from Hipihi have always been slow for me, and they might for you. So – be patient. It’s not like you have to just watch the download screen it’s downloading.

I’m still waiting for the download to complete, so I don’t know exactly what to expect yet.

This is a beta; it’s not the finished product. One can expect to have some rocky riding during a beta.

I’m not sure about the language requirements for this version, or the degree to which the interface is available in English.

So – why not give Hipihi a try?

HTML on a prim – sort of – Release Notes for Second Life Release Candidate 1.19.1(0) March 5th, 2008

This seems to be fairly significant, Second Life will be mainstreaming Windlight and offering a much improved parcel media capability, meaning showing normal web content on a parcel media textured prim instead of just quicktime displayable content.

If anyone has a parcel making use of the new web content capability please let me know, I’d like to take a look.

Second Life Community Entry Points

Second Life has a number of places that new users can sign up with that start the user out at different places in Second Life, places operated by various third party in partnership with Linden Lab, with the different places having different styles according to the tastes of the Second Life community partner. I was looking for a simple list of these places and I didn’t see one, so I made one. As always when making a static copy of something, errors in copying can occur, and the information may become out of date. These links take you to the sign up pages for these community entry points.

Hipihi 50012 – F1 Help – in English!

Not to report great things too soon, but pressing F1 in the new Hipihi version 50012 has produced a screen of help text in English.

I’m not able to copy and paste the text, unfortunately, but here is a screenshot: F1 Help in English

Hipihi has a setup program that I need to run because Hipihi thinks my video card is a bit better than it really is, or something like that. I can set my card to the optimum setting, the lowest setting, but I can’t read the dialog box text, and I still don’t know what the other settings are for or how to set them correctly.

The FPS setting had shown 50, I changed it to 20, thinking it might be the FPS I want the system to try to achieve. 20 is adequate, I’d rather see farther and have things look better. So maybe 20 will let the system try to give a better display. Or maybe not, how do I know, I can’t read the instructions.

Well this time setting my video setting to the one that worked in earlier versions has not caused the terrain to display properly, the terrain is gray.

I am also unable to walk. I don’t know what the problem is is.

I’m getting tired. I think I will see about heading on to sleep shortly.

To read more about Hipihi 50012, if you read Chinese, go to hipihi.com, if not, go to http://www.ideashape.cn and the Overseas Zone forum in the forums at Hipihil.com.

Hipihi’s looking good.  At least some of my problems with 50012 were my own fault, not paying proper attention to details when installing, then getting “creative” trying to fix things, i.e., really screwing it up.

There’s some nice looking builds there.

Hipihi 50011 – Second times the charm.

I just installed Hipihi 50011 a few minutes ago.

After several attempts to log in  met with “Server Maintenance” errors, I mentioned this to the Hipihi@msn.com group, which of course meant that my next attempt would succeed.

Having used the word “succeed” in this post, I now have a “There was an error in your appearance data, reload?” dialog box.

Probably the thing to do in such a case is click ok.

This error message is also in English.

The toolbar at the bottom is also in English. (You know, I’m tired of capitalizing english. It’s just the name of a language. It doesn’t merit finding the shift key.)

Alright, click OK.

Well Phoo again, it’s showing me as male, and the terrain appears gray.

Switching the avatar to female is a simple task.  The gray terrain will require restarting.

Looks like I’ve lost my customized face and hair.  It wasn’t much in the way of customization so it doesn’t matter.  Also the default Hipihi female avatar has a great figure that doesn’t scream “Adjust Me” so that’s good.

I was hoping to see all English on the interface but no such luck, but, if it is using the partly English interface without having to do the text file editing the previous version required that is a good thing.  It might, however, be reading the text file that had to be edited in the previous version.  I didn’t uninstall the old version, and I didn’t take any steps to keep the new version from overwriting the old version or using the same folder as the old one did.  So it might be using configuration info from the old version.

Exiting from the Hipihi client, I attempt to find the “Configure Hipihi” program in the Hipihi system tray icon. (Notification area icon for you youngsters).  The right click menu for the Hipihi system tray icon is in Chinese, so it’s a matter of trial and error.  There doesn’t seem to be such an option.  That means it will be in the Start Programs Hipihi folder,. under “Hipihi Config”,. and indeed, there it is.

The Config dialog is in Chinese.  I don’t know what the first one is since I can’t read it.

The second one has options 2_0, 2_A, and 3_0, for different classes of video cards.  My ATI Radeon X800 gets assigned as the middle grade ny the Hipihi folks, assuming the installation program checked , but appears to only really be able to work right at the lowest setting, so I set this to 2_0

Pressing the left Chinese labeled button on the Config dialog box closes the dialog and I try again.  I check the properties of the Hipihi Quicklaunch icon.  It is ambigous about what version it will run – it just shows Hipihi World as the program folder and Hipihi.exe as the file to run.  Apparently this is the correct info to run the new version.  I expect the terrain to be terrain colored this time. .  It’s still loading.  There’s the login dialog, click OK, there’s the bird chirping and other ambient noises one would expect in Hipihi.

Hipihi starts out zoomed way the heck away from your avatar . I don’t know what that’s about.

It did remember that I’d changed the av to female during my brief first run.  And the terrain is now terrain instead of looking like loading texture from Second Life.

It’s night in Beijing and in Hipihi, which means that I can’t test out whether they’ve solved the problem of the pulsating sun.  Somewhat like the Second Life windlight client story, Hipihi started out with a small simple sun, and at some point the programmers decided to make the sun fancy.  Problem is, I don’t want a big bright fancy sun, and, worse, in Hipihi the fancy sun has so far failed to work properly.  It pulsates, it changes sizes like a heart contracting and releasing, and the light rays coming from it are quite cartoonish and wrong looking.  They also added a lens flare, but I’m not using a camera, and I don’t notice lens flare effects in the real world while I am outside.  So I’m not too pleased with the whole big attention getting sun deal, but if there’s got to be some kind of cult of the sun thing going on, it should at least work right.  So far Hiphi’s monster sun is monstrous but works wrong.  The sun in a virtual world doesn’t need to look realistic at all.  It needs to have an appearance that pleases the user.

Enough about the sun.  Now to find some trees.

Well I didn’t make it to trees before seeing a mountain.  I stop to see if I can walk on the slope.  Hipihi has up till now done a bad job of dealing with hills, with the avatar on slopes.

Well they’ve got that problem fixed. You can walk or run up and down slopes without any trouble.  Excellent!

It’s been a bit disappointing so far in Hipihi seeing the motionless trees.  The birthplace in Hipihi has trees; so click on the Map button and the Birthplace button and ….

Moving trees!!!!!! Hooray!!!!

And they’re phantom too, so no more getting stuck in the trees all the time.

Im getting nervous about all these words not being saved so I’m gonna go ahead and post this now.

Hipihi 50011 – first try

It took a long time for only a 62 meg file to download Hipihi 50011 but it did finally make it.

I’ve installed it and am now on the login screen.

I didn’t uninstall the old version, which might be an error.

I didn’t make the changes that you used to have to make in the previous versions that gave me a partially English language interface.  I don’t know if the Anglicized version  of 50011 is available yet.

Hipihi was down for several days implementing the server side and client changes.

Well here goes.

Phoo.

“Server Maintenance”, says the dialog box with the error message.

It says it in English though, so that’s good.  The installation program did ask for a language but that is common in installation programs, it’s  often for determining what language the installation program displays rather than what language the program being installed will use.

I was hoping for something to save me from the Second Life Resident Answers forum.

Hipihi 50011 available

I am in the process of downloading the 50011 version of Hipihi now.

The download is very slow. I’ve had very bad results when downloading things lately.

Fortunately Hipihi’s installation file is not real big, it’s around 50 megs, the same range as Second Life’s installation file.

I don’t see any posts about this in the Overseas Zone forum at forums.hipihi.com so I don’t know if the system is actually up and running.

Hmm, looking again, I see the filesize for Hipihi has grown to 62 megs.  Getting bigger.

“Hi-Time” Hipihi digital magazine, volume 2

There’s a “digital magazine” produced by the Hipihi company available for download at http://www.hipihi.com/community/community_Hitime.jsp .

I don’t think it has any information about stems or seed or the best kind of growing lights.  That’s “High Times”.   Remeber High Times?

This Hi-Time  digital magazine concerns itself with the Hipihi virtual world.  You can get both volume 1 and volume 2 at that site.
