I have a QQ account now!

My QQ id is 823498840.

I would be pleased if some Hipihi and Novoking users would add me to their QQ lists.

I have a partially English version of the QQ messenger installed now.

I have a QQzone page but haven’t figured out how to edit it yet since the page itself is in Chinese.

A Hipihi user set up my QQ account and thus my password is known to someone else. I will have to figure out how to change the password, which might be a bit of a job since the links for the password changing page and the page you change the password on will all be in Chinese.

HTML on a prim – sort of – Release Notes for Second Life Release Candidate 1.19.1(0) March 5th, 2008

This seems to be fairly significant, Second Life will be mainstreaming Windlight and offering a much improved parcel media capability, meaning showing normal web content on a parcel media textured prim instead of just quicktime displayable content.

If anyone has a parcel making use of the new web content capability please let me know, I’d like to take a look.

Hipihi 50012

I don’t know 50012 has in store at the moment.

I tried to start up Hipihi and an english language dialog box came up and said to download 50012 and offered me a choice of downloading or not. The message said yes or no, but the buttons on the dialog were labeled ok and cancel.

Another dialog appeared with the buttons labeled in chinese. I chose the one on the left. Sometimes this works, sometimes I should have picked the one on the right. Not agonizing too much over which choice to make is one of the secrets of using a program that has an interface partially in a language you can’t read.

If the download is going true form it will be very slow and since it’s after 1 in the morning I won’t get to try Hipihi 50012 out till tomorrow.

Oops, spoke too soon.. Up till now, the Hipihi downloads have been very slow. This time it’s changed, the download is at 150 KB/s, a perfectly acceptable rate at which to get a file that’s 62 megs big.

This faster download is a great improvement. I hope it’s permanent.

The TOS (License Agreement) is still in Chinese.

The PDF help file, which looks like it would be real helpful if I could read it, is still in Chinese.

I’ve tried to translate these with Google but it’s just too much to deal with convering the file from pdf to html and copying the text chunk by chunk into the translator and back. I’m sure there a “pay for ” method to do this easily but I can’t find an easy “for free” method.

Hipihi 50012 has a bunch of red in the color scheme for the manual and login screen in connection with the Spring Festival and Chinese New Year celebration . There’s a picture of some kind of treats and beverages on the login screen. They have good designers at Hipihi.

I did remember to go the xml file in the Hipihi program folder and change the 0 to 1. This is part of using the partial English interface.

I haven’t gone to the forums or the website to figure out what is different about 50012.

I’m logged in now.

Last time I was in Hipihi, someone gave me something they’d made. I put it on as an attachment.

Starting out now, I’m still wearing it. snake attached

The hair texture is from a globe of the earth.

The attachment is a snake, multiple prims, made by Bullman, attached to one of the numerous attachment points Hiphi avatars have.

Someone asked my why I wearing cowboy clothes. That’s what the system put on me! I don’t have much other clothes in Hiphi. I haven’t gone to the bother of making any, but I think I could ask people for some now that one can do inventory transfers.

Time to look around. Hi.

Linden Blog Doesn’t Load – forum 503 Service Errors continue

Linden Lab says that it wants to have millions of people online in a Second Life protocol based 3D internet.

Let’s hope LL does a better job with the 3D internet than it’s doing with the 2D internet lately.

The Linden Lab blog doesn’t load reliably.

Linden Lab’s forums.secondlife.com persists in producing frequent 503 Service Unavailable errors. It can take dozens of tries to finally get a forum post to go through, or to see the next thread in a forum.

Please fix the website, LL, and don’t let the customer service department be telling people the problem is fixed when it’s not.

Linden staff may not spend much time in the forums and not be aware of just how pitifully bad they are behaving.

I would not be surprised if there were some folks leaving Second Life forever solely from aggravation with the forums abysmal performance.

Good way to tell LL they’re stupid

A thread in the Linden Lab’s Second Life Forums (payment verified members only) from an exasperated user expressed the desire for a “Good way to tell LL they’re stupid”.

I’m don’t think Linden Lab is stupid. I don’t have to agree with the premise in order to conjure up ways to tell LL they’re stupid. Here are a few:

One good way to tell LL they are stupid would be to get a picture of each staff member, and get a “Books on Demand” printer to produce a customized dictionary for each each staff member. The employee’s picture would be included in the the definition of stupid with a caption like “This person is stupid.” Mail these to LL.Other good ways to tell LL they are stupid would be to have a full building wrap done on one of the skyscrapers in downtown SF with giant magenta and green letters spelling out the “LL is stupid” message.A skywriting plane spelling out “LL is stupid!” every day for a month would probably make the point.

The Goodyear blimp has electric signage that could be brought into play in spreading this message.

Maybe you could get some major soft drink makers to print this on the inside of bottle caps. That would be kind of odd, getting a drink and finding “LL is stupid!” in such an unlikely place.

I suppose one could use prims at the right height and location to display this message on the map inworld.

Coordinate blog replies so the first letter of a number of replies in sequence spells out “LL is stupid!”.

Sneakily acquire their driver’s licences and put a little teeny strip of paper with the word Stupid! on it over top of where their name goes.

Maybe someone can add some more.

Hipihi 50011 – Second times the charm.

I just installed Hipihi 50011 a few minutes ago.

After several attempts to log in  met with “Server Maintenance” errors, I mentioned this to the Hipihi@msn.com group, which of course meant that my next attempt would succeed.

Having used the word “succeed” in this post, I now have a “There was an error in your appearance data, reload?” dialog box.

Probably the thing to do in such a case is click ok.

This error message is also in English.

The toolbar at the bottom is also in English. (You know, I’m tired of capitalizing english. It’s just the name of a language. It doesn’t merit finding the shift key.)

Alright, click OK.

Well Phoo again, it’s showing me as male, and the terrain appears gray.

Switching the avatar to female is a simple task.  The gray terrain will require restarting.

Looks like I’ve lost my customized face and hair.  It wasn’t much in the way of customization so it doesn’t matter.  Also the default Hipihi female avatar has a great figure that doesn’t scream “Adjust Me” so that’s good.

I was hoping to see all English on the interface but no such luck, but, if it is using the partly English interface without having to do the text file editing the previous version required that is a good thing.  It might, however, be reading the text file that had to be edited in the previous version.  I didn’t uninstall the old version, and I didn’t take any steps to keep the new version from overwriting the old version or using the same folder as the old one did.  So it might be using configuration info from the old version.

Exiting from the Hipihi client, I attempt to find the “Configure Hipihi” program in the Hipihi system tray icon. (Notification area icon for you youngsters).  The right click menu for the Hipihi system tray icon is in Chinese, so it’s a matter of trial and error.  There doesn’t seem to be such an option.  That means it will be in the Start Programs Hipihi folder,. under “Hipihi Config”,. and indeed, there it is.

The Config dialog is in Chinese.  I don’t know what the first one is since I can’t read it.

The second one has options 2_0, 2_A, and 3_0, for different classes of video cards.  My ATI Radeon X800 gets assigned as the middle grade ny the Hipihi folks, assuming the installation program checked , but appears to only really be able to work right at the lowest setting, so I set this to 2_0

Pressing the left Chinese labeled button on the Config dialog box closes the dialog and I try again.  I check the properties of the Hipihi Quicklaunch icon.  It is ambigous about what version it will run – it just shows Hipihi World as the program folder and Hipihi.exe as the file to run.  Apparently this is the correct info to run the new version.  I expect the terrain to be terrain colored this time. .  It’s still loading.  There’s the login dialog, click OK, there’s the bird chirping and other ambient noises one would expect in Hipihi.

Hipihi starts out zoomed way the heck away from your avatar . I don’t know what that’s about.

It did remember that I’d changed the av to female during my brief first run.  And the terrain is now terrain instead of looking like loading texture from Second Life.

It’s night in Beijing and in Hipihi, which means that I can’t test out whether they’ve solved the problem of the pulsating sun.  Somewhat like the Second Life windlight client story, Hipihi started out with a small simple sun, and at some point the programmers decided to make the sun fancy.  Problem is, I don’t want a big bright fancy sun, and, worse, in Hipihi the fancy sun has so far failed to work properly.  It pulsates, it changes sizes like a heart contracting and releasing, and the light rays coming from it are quite cartoonish and wrong looking.  They also added a lens flare, but I’m not using a camera, and I don’t notice lens flare effects in the real world while I am outside.  So I’m not too pleased with the whole big attention getting sun deal, but if there’s got to be some kind of cult of the sun thing going on, it should at least work right.  So far Hiphi’s monster sun is monstrous but works wrong.  The sun in a virtual world doesn’t need to look realistic at all.  It needs to have an appearance that pleases the user.

Enough about the sun.  Now to find some trees.

Well I didn’t make it to trees before seeing a mountain.  I stop to see if I can walk on the slope.  Hipihi has up till now done a bad job of dealing with hills, with the avatar on slopes.

Well they’ve got that problem fixed. You can walk or run up and down slopes without any trouble.  Excellent!

It’s been a bit disappointing so far in Hipihi seeing the motionless trees.  The birthplace in Hipihi has trees; so click on the Map button and the Birthplace button and ….

Moving trees!!!!!! Hooray!!!!

And they’re phantom too, so no more getting stuck in the trees all the time.

Im getting nervous about all these words not being saved so I’m gonna go ahead and post this now.

Chinese architectural build in Hipihi

I will not mince words, I am not knowledgeable enough to know
for certain that is in fact an example of Chinese architectural style.
I do know for certain that this is a very nice build.  No, it’s not my build,
I did not make it.

This build is under construction as of  August 18, 2007.

Why not load up the Asian language package, adjust some settings in
Windows,  sign up for the Hipihi beta and see this build and a number of
other nice constructions for yourself?
